Teenager pranks White House out of sheer curiosity; blowback kind of hilarious

Now this is funny, and it lends evidence to our theory that teenagers might save the world. Reason being? Long known for their unique ability to program VCRs, teenagers are also weirdly adept at hacking into government networks, and appear to be the only real threat posed to the infrastructure of capitalism.
So when an Icelandic 16-year-old called Bush’s personal number, or at least a very, very private number, all hell broke beautifully loose. Vífill Atlason decided he “just wanted to talk to [Bush], have a chat, invite him to Iceland and see what he’d say.”
Is there any thinking person who doesn’t find this utterly endearing?
Figuring anyone on the other end of his highly secret number wouldn’t be interested in chatting with a teenager, Vífill claimed he was Icelandic president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. Apparently, White House phone-answerers quizzed him about the president’s date of birth and date he took office in an attempt to confirm that it was indeed Grímsson on the phone. Vífill said he used a quick search on Wikipedia to answer correctly.
We imagine those on the White House end of the line were also pointing their browsers to Iceland’s wiki.
Apparently, Vífill talked his way through several levels of clearance, and eventually spoke to Bush’s secretary.
“She told me the president was not available at the time, but that she would mark it in his schedule to call me back on Monday evening,” he said.
Instead, the police showed up at his home in Akranes, a fishing town about 48 kilometers from Reykjavik, and took him to the local police station, where they questioned the 16-year-old for several hours.
“The police chief said they were under orders from U.S. officials to “find the leak” — that I had to tell them where I had found the number,” he said. “Otherwise, I would be banned from ever entering the United States.”
ABC News “verified” the number as belonging to the Secret Service Uniform Division. You and I know these people as the scary folks who have laser beams in their eyeballs that can zap your DNA and cross-check it against a huge database that will predict all of your most perverse thoughts if you should ever come within a hundred mile radius of the President’s person. White House spokesmonkeys claimed Vífill only called the switchboard. Vífill’s mother isn’t buying it either, and is not-so-secretly thrilled at her son’s extra-curricular research. For this, she too gets a round of applause from us here at American Heresy.
Atlason’s mother Harpa, who was not home at the time, said she was shocked to find her son had been taken away by the police but could not quite bring herself to be angry with her son.
“He’s very resourceful you know,” she said. “He has become a bit of a hero in Iceland. Bush is very unpopular here.”
